Over the past half century, Tibetan Buddhism has experienced the most rapid global expansion of any Buddhist tradition, becoming one of the most prominent and widely embraced religious traditions in the world today. As the representative form of Esoteric (Vajrayāna) Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism contains a vast array of tantric yogic techniques and ritual practices, which have drawn extensive attention from both the public and the academic community. Yet, owing to the lack of in-depth research and proper guidance concerning tantric practice, various misunderstandings and criticisms have also arisen. This lecture provide a religious and academic explanation of the “Wrathful Deities” (joyous or fierce deities) and “sexual-yoga practices” (consort practices) found in Tibetan Buddhism. Through this discussion, it aims to offer a hermeneutical account of the fundamental doctrinal principles and internal logic underlying tantric practices in Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism.

Philology and the Methods and Practices of Modern Humanities

Philology was once the origin and the most fundamental methodology of modern humanistic scholarship. However, over the past century, the practice of the humanities worldwide has gradually distanced itself from philology. Humanistic scholars have often neglected rigorous philological training and pursued lofty, ambitious goals without solid foundations, resulting in scholarship that is like a tree without roots or water without a source. This lecture subdivides philology into six major categories and provides a detailed account of its historical formation and development. It further elucidates the profound connections between philology and modern humanistic disciplines, as well as its crucial significance for the healthy development of contemporary humanities. The lecture calls for a return to philological study in current humanistic research, aiming to restore the foundational grounding of contemporary humanistic scholarship.
