Andrea Acri (PhD Leiden University, 2011; Habil. Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, 2024) is Associate Professor in Tantric Studies in the Religious Studies section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), PSL University, Paris. He investigates tantric traditions in South and Southeast Asia from a text-historical and artistic perspective, with particular emphasis on intra-Asian maritime circulation and the interactions between Śaiva and Buddhist traditions in premodern insular Southeast Asia. He is the Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project MANTRATANTRAM (Monsoon Asia as the Nexus for the TRAnsfer of TANTRA along the Maritime routes), which focuses on the transmission of esoteric knowledge across South and Southeast Asia, combining philological, art historical, and digital humanities approaches. In addition, he serves as Lead Researcher in the ERC Synergy project MANTRAMS (Mantras in Religion, Media, and Society in Global Southern Asia), hosted at the universities of Vienna, Tübingen, Oxford, and the EPHE from 2024 to 2030.

Bai Bing is a PhD candidate in the Department of East Asian Art History at Heidelberg University, Germany. She received his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University and his master’s degree from Renmin University of China. From 2019 to 2024, she served as an academic assistant for the “Chinese Buddhist Stone Sutras” project at the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. In 2024–2025, he was a visiting scholar in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. His research interests focus on Yuan dynasty art history, with particular attention to the authentication of Ni Zan’s paintings and calligraphy, his artistic practices, and his social networks. He has published multiple articles in journals such as Chinese CalligraphyCalligraphy StudiesPalace Museum JournalZhuangshi, and the Journal of Nanjing University of the Arts (Fine Arts & Design Edition).

Research interests focus on the history of Sino-Indian cultural exchanges, South Asian religious cultures, and modern Indian languages and literature.

4 Nadine BREGLER, University of Hamburg

Nadine Bregler is currently a Glorisun Postdoctoral Fellow specialising in medieval Chinese history and manuscript studies. Her research centres on previously overlooked Buddhist poetry collections dating from the ninth to the twelfth centuries. Focusing on the transition from manuscript culture to the introduction of print, she examines how texts were compiled, organised, and edited during the Song dynasty (960–1279), particularly in light of the loss of many Tang-era (618–907) manuscripts.

Nadine Bregler completed her PhD at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Culture at the University of Hamburg in 2025. Her doctoral thesis analysed literary multiple-text manuscripts from Dunhuang, reassessing their use and value for both producers and later users. She has published in edited volumes, including Saved from Desert Sands: Re-discovering Objects on the Silk Roads (Brill, 2024), where she discusses the handling and use of manuscripts as objects, and Graffiti Scratched, Scrawled, Sprayed: Towards a Cross-Cultural Understanding (De Gruyter, 2023), in which she examines Chinese graffiti in Dunhuang.

Principal Investigator of the National Social Science Fund project “New Breakthroughs in the Historical Interpretive Theory and Methodology of the California School” (No. 20CZS002), which has been completed.

Jinhua Chen, a native of Minhou, Fujian, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and Professor in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia, where he also long held the prestigious Canada Research Chair in East Asian Buddhism. His research spans a wide range of fields, including the history of interactions between monks and laity in East Asia, medieval Buddhist sectarian historiography, apocryphal scriptures, medieval Buddhist hagiographical literature, Buddhist translation literature, monastic economy, Chan/Zen history, Buddhism and technological innovation, and Buddhism-mediated cross-cultural exchange. His scholarship combines rigorous philological research with broad intellectual-historical vision. Professor Chen has published six scholarly monographs, with three more forthcoming, edited and co-edited more than forty volumes, and authored over one hundred academic articles. His research projects have received support from major international funding institutions, including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Max Planck Institutes, and the U.S. National Humanities Center. In recent years, he has directed the major international collaborative project “From the Ground Up: Buddhism and East Asian Religions” (FROGBEAR), which seeks to rethink important dimensions of Buddhism and East Asian religions through interdisciplinary approaches while further advancing the internationalization of East Asian Buddhist Studies.

陳金華,福建閩侯人,加拿大皇家學會院士、英屬哥倫比亞大學亞洲研究系教授,曾長期擔任加拿大國立東亞佛教講座教授。研究涉及東亞僧俗互動史、中古佛教宗派歷史編纂學、疑偽經研究、中古僧傳文學、佛教翻譯文學、寺院經濟、禪宗史、佛教與技術革新、佛教與中外交流等多個領域,兼具嚴密文獻考證與宏觀思想史視野,已出版學術專著6部、待刊3部、合編論文集40余部,發表論文100余篇。項目屢獲加拿大國家社科基金、日本學術振興會、德國洪堡基金會、馬普研究所,以及美國國家人文研究中心等國際權威機構資助。近年主持“拔地入雲”(FROGBEAR)大型國際合作項目,旨在通過跨學科視角,重構佛學與東亞宗教的重要面向,並推動東亞佛教研究的國際化。

Jiayi Gao is a PhD candidate in Art History at the School of Arts, Peking University, and spent one year as a CSC-funded visiting doctoral researcher at the Laboratory of East Asian Art History, Osaka University. Her main research interests include East Asian art history, Buddhist art, and tomb art. She focuses on the transmission of Avalokiteśvara imagery in East Asia and the visual construction of sacred-site beliefs. She has published several articles in journals and collections such as Journal of Nanjing University of the Arts (Fine Arts & Design) and Image Historical Studies.

宮瑞龍現為德國漢堡大學寫本文化研究中心漢學博士候選人,2018年畢業於北京大學,獲材料化學學士及漢語言文學學士雙學位,2023年獲臺灣大學中國文學碩士學位。其碩士論文《六朝書籍形制與閱讀方式的交互研究——以陶淵明個案為例》,著重考察中古中國書籍形制與閱讀實踐之間的關係。其研究興趣涉及中國古代書籍史、古典文獻學與目錄學、文本的形成與傳播、寫本文化等領域。基於對文本物質性的關注,其目前的博士研究主要探討早期與中古中國文本編纂、排序與分篇的原則,特別關注文本單元的組織編排與“內”“外”劃分,而這一概念框架可能也對後世佛教的“內/外典”觀念有所影響。

Ruilong Gong is a PhD candidate in Sinology at the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC), University of Hamburg. He received dual Bachelor’s degrees in Material Chemistry (B.Sc.) and Chinese Language and Literature (B.A.) from Peking University in 2018, and completed his MA in Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University in 2023. His MA thesis, A Study of the Book Format and Reading Method of the Six Dynasties: A Case Study of Tao Yuanming, examined the relationship between book forms and reading practices in medieval China. His research interests include book history in premodern China, classical Chinese philology and bibliography, the formation and transmission of texts, and manuscript cultures. With a particular interest in the materiality of texts, his current doctoral research investigates principles of textual compilation, sequencing, and division in early and medieval China, with special attention to the organization of textual units and classifications of “inner” and “outer” divisions, conceptual frameworks that may have contributed to the later Buddhist notion of “nei/wai dian” (內/外典, “Inner/Outer Canons”).

Matthew A. Hale is a translator, editor, researcher, and writer currently based in Nashville, Tennessee, after having lived in China for fifteen years. His recent work has focused on academic texts dealing with Buddhism, history, anthropology, and social movements. Hale’s Ph.D. dissertation examined several smallholder organizations in China’s New Rural Reconstruction Movement from 2006 to 2012. He has studied Modern Chinese since the 1990s, Literary and Buddhist Chinese since the 2000s, and a few other languages, including Classical and Modern Tibetan. His personal interests include birdwatching, Ashtanga yoga, communist theory, and the intersection between Buddhism, activism, and mental health.

Hou Haoran holds the position of ZJU 100 Young Professor of School of History at Zhejiang University. His received his PhD from the Institute for Indology and Central Asian Studies at Leipzig University, Germany. During his doctoral studies, he worked as a research assistant at the CERES of the University of Bochum, Germany. Before joining Zhejiang University, he spent two years as a post-doctoral researcher in the Shui Mu Scholars Programme (水木學者) at the School of Humanities, Tsinghua University. His academic interests focus on Tibetan hagiographical and historical writings and on the Chinese, Tibetan and Tangut Tantric texts excavated at the site of Kharakhoto.

LEI Yang is an Associate Professor of imperial Chinese history at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco) in Paris. His research focuses on the religious and sensory histories of premodern and modern China (Ming-Qing), as well as the history of French sinology during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Li Hailei, a doctoral graduate from Shanghai University, currently serves as an associate professor and master’s supervisor at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, a specially appointed researcher at the Western Art and Chinese National Community Research Institute, and a “Bayu Young Scholar” in Chongqing. He is a member of the China Artists Association and the China Dunhuang-Turpan Society. He has led four major research projects, including the National Social Science Fund Youth Project “A Study on the History of Ethnic Integration Images in Silk Road Murals from the 3rd to the 9th Centuries” and key provincial social science projects (three of which have been completed). He has published over 20 academic papers in journals such as Guangming Daily, China Art Research, and Silk Road Culture Research. He has participated in numerous prestigious academic conferences, including the International Academic Symposium on Silk Road Civilization and Kucha Cultural History and the 8th Annual Conference on Kucha Studies, the Second Academic Symposium on Interactions and Integration of Multicultural Cultures in Dunhuang, the International Forum on the Protection and Utilization of Silk Road Cultural Heritage, the Symposium on Silk Road History and Culture and Distinctive Features of Chinese Civilization, the National High-Level Forum on Fine Arts, and the 7th National Young Scholars Forum on Art Studies, where he delivered keynote speeches.

Li Jing, female, of Han ethnicity. She earned her Master’s degree in Chinese History from Lanzhou University and Doctoral degree in Fine Arts from East China Normal University. Currently, she serves as Deputy Director of the Fine Arts Department, School of Art & Design, and Deputy Director of the General Education Center for Aesthetic Education, Taizhou University. Her research focuses on the history of Buddhist art and Buddhist texts.

She has published numerous papers in CSSCI-indexed journals and collected works, including Journal of Nanjing Arts Institute, Chinese Art Research, Iconographical Historiography and Journal of Traditional Chinese Studies. Her papers have been selected for major academic conferences such as the 2023 Annual Conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) in the United States, the 15th, 16th and 18th National Annual Conference on Art History of Chinese Universities, and the International Doctoral Forum in Art Studies at Peking University.

She has participated in major projects sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Finance of China, as well as sub-projects and general projects of the National Social Science Fund for Art Studies. Meanwhile, she presides over the 2025 Youth Fund Project of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, general projects of Taizhou Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning, and key projects of Taizhou Education Science Planning.

Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of History of Ancient Civilizations (IHAC), Northeast Normal University. My current research focuses on historical sources related to “Persia” in the works of early Byzantine historians, with a particular emphasis on the role and influence of “Persia” in the construction of early Byzantine identity. During my master’s studies, I studied under Professor Zhang Xiaogui, focusing on the history of Sassanian Iran and Zoroastrianism, and am well-versed in the religious policies of early Sassanian Iran. During my doctoral studies, I studied under Professor Lin Ying and have developed a long-standing academic interest in Sassanian silver coins, the western segments of the Maritime and Land Silk Roads, and Byzantine-Sassanian bilateral relations.

My research focuses on the the history of Chinese buddhist bibliography and Chinese buddhist historiography. Recently I am working on the study of Chu sanzang jiji and Fozu tongji. I have published a number of articles in academic journals such as Zhonghua wenshi luncong (Journal of Chinese Literature and History) and Wenxian (The Documentation).

Liu Yi, was born in Beijing in 1972. In 2000, he obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of History at Capital Normal University, where he subsequently took up a teaching position. Currently, he is a professor, doctoral supervisor, and dean at the School of History of Capital Normal University, as well as the vice president of the China Dunhuang and Turfan Society. His areas of expertise are Dunhuang studies and the religious history of medieval China. He has published over 160 academic papers, research book reviews, and translations in various domestic and international journals and anthologies. He has authored and edited eight monographs and collections of essays: “Reverence for Heaven and the Exaltation of the Dao: The Intellectual History Background of the Formation of Medieval Confucian and Daoist Thoughts” (2005), “Classics and History: A Collection of Studies on Daoist Scriptures from Dunhuang” (2011), “Divinity and Regionality: Studies on the Daoist Belief World between the Han and Tang Dynasties” (2011), “Daoist Scriptures of Dunhuang and Medieval Daoism” (2013), “Historical and Documentary Studies of Han and Tang Daoism: Selected Works of Liu Yi” (2015), “Introduction to the Study of Chinese Daoism History” (2017), “Historical Studies on the Lingbao Scriptures of the Six Dynasties” (2018), and “Longsha Lun Dao Ji” (2020). He has successfully completed two general projects and one key project funded by the National Social Science Fund, as well as one project supported by the Ministry of Education’s Humanities and Social Sciences.His research is characterized by the use of historical analysis to study the formation and ideological contexts of religious scriptures. From 1996 to 2016, his primary research focus was on Daoist history and scriptures. In terms of Daoist history, he has critically examined the historical model of the “Five Pecks of Rice Dao to Celestial Master Dao” lineage. Regarding Daoist scriptures, he has conducted specialized research on texts such as the “Taiping Jing,” “Laozi Xiang Er Zhu,” “Laozi Hua Hu Jing,” “Laozi Bian Hua Jing,” “Sheng Xuan Nei Jiao Jing,” “Tai Shang Miao Fa Ben Xiang Jing,” and the “Lingbao Scriptures” of the Six Dynasties. Since 2017, he has shifted his focus to the study of medieval Buddhism, with particular interest in the history of Buddhism in the Western Regions, overland Buddhist trade routes between China and India, the history and art of Buddhism’s initial transmission to China, and comparative studies on Indian Buddhist “Dharma decline” prophecies and East Asian Buddhist “end of the Dharma” concepts.

硏究特點:注重以歷史學分析史料的方法來研討宗教典籍的形成與思想脈絡。1996—2016年的主要研究領域是道教歷史與文獻。在道教歷史方面,對早期道教的“五斗米道—天師道”一線單傳的歷史模式提出質疑。在道教文獻方面,對《太平經》《老子想爾注》《老子化胡經》《老子變化經》《昇玄內教經》《太上妙法本相經》等道書和六朝的“古靈寶經”有專門的研究。2017年以來,轉向中古佛教研究,目前對西域佛教史、中印佛教陸路交通路線、佛教初傳中國時期的歷史與藝術、印度佛教的“法滅”預言與東亞佛教的“末法思想”問題比較關注。

Her research focuses on Song and Yuan dynasty Buddhist literature, with a particular emphasis on monastic poetry. Methodologically, she systematically integrates traditional philology with digital humanities techniques, specifically utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). She has received training in computational text analysis and has developed and released LB-Chinese-Poetry-Sentiment, a pre-trained model specifically designed for emotion analysis in Classical Chinese poems. Additionally, she participates in the Dharmamitra project led by the University of California, Berkeley, which evaluates the performance and hermeneutic implications of large language models in translating Classical Chinese. Her recent work in computational codicology involves developing a screening workflow based on a Thermodynamic Conduction Model to analyze regional religious ritual manuscripts. Her scholarship has been published in journals such as Religions and in the proceedings of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). She has presented her research at the International Association of Buddhist Studies (IABS) conference in Leipzig, the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) annual conference, and at an invited workshop at Zhejiang University.

ZHANG Meiqiao received her PhD in 2022 from the International College for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies in Tokyo, Japan, with a dissertation on the transmission and transformation of the Mahāprajñāpāramitāsūtra 大般若波羅蜜多經. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. Her research concentrates chiefly on manuscript and ancient woodblock editions of the Chinese Buddhist literature. Zhang Yuan is a doctoral candidate specializing in Korean Ancient History in the Department of Korean History at Seoul National University and currently serves as a lecturer in the Department of History, College of Humanities, Seoul National University. His research interests include the history of material and cultural exchange between China and Korea in antiquity, the institutional history of Silla, and the transmission and reception of Chinese institutions on the Korean Peninsula.In recent years, his research has focused on institutional, religious, and cultural interactions between Tang China and Silla, with particular attention to reexamining Sino-Korean relations and ritual culture in medieval East Asia from the perspective of transregional exchange. She has published articles in leading Korean historical journals such as The Journal of Oriental Studies and The Jindan Hakbo, addressing topics including the autonomous organization of Silla migrant communities in Tang China and Silla-related religious institutions. She has also conducted long-term overseas research at Kyoto Prefectural University in Japan and has presented papers at international academic conferences in China, Korea, and Japan on subjects including Tang Buddhist ritual practices, Silla local governance, archaeological phenomena, and the transmission of East Asian culture.

She has received several academic honors, including the Grand Prize in the “Outstanding Thesis Award on East Asian Studies” granted by the Hakbong Scholarship Foundation in Korea and the Second Prize for Outstanding Paper at the doctoral forum “Tradition and Modernity in the East Asian Cultural Sphere” hosted by Peking University. His research has also been continuously supported by the BK21 program funded by the Ministry of Education of Korea.

Zheng Jiajia, Male, from Anqing, Anhui Province. He graduated from the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China in July 2020 with a Ph.D. in Philosophy, majoring in Religious Studies. In August 2020, he joined the School of Marxism at Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics as a Lecturer and Master’s Supervisor. He was a visiting scholar at the Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia, Canada, in 2018, and a Visiting Scholar at the School of History, Zhejiang University, from September 2024 to July 2025. His research fields cover the history of Buddhism in the Tang and Song dynasties, the history of state–saṃgha relations, and the history of Buddhist institutions. In recent years, his research has centered on “the institution of the Buddhist palace chapels (neidaochang) in the Tang Dynasty.” He has presided over one Youth Project of the National Social Science Fund of China and participated in one Major Project of the National Social Science Fund of China. Zhu Hu, a native of Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts at Shanghai University and completed postdoctoral research at the School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University. Ming Zhu, male, was born in September 1994. From 2013 to 2023, he studied Archaeology at the School of History and Culture, Sichuan University, where he received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in History. Since 2024, he has been serving as an Assistant Research Fellow at the School of History, Nanjing University. His primary research interests include the archaeology of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau and the archaeology of the Han–Tang periods. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Xizang, Qinghai, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Jiangsu, and has participated in the excavation of numerous major archaeological sites, including the Baodun site in Xinjin, Chengdu; the Lajia site in Minhe, Qinghai; the Phyi Dbang Dung Dkar site in Zanda County, Xizang; the Sanxingdui site in Guanghan, Sichuan; the Jiesang cemetery in Shannan, Xizang; and the Longduntou site in Yancheng, Jiangsu. 鄒旻, 四川大學
鄒旻現爲四川大學文學院中國古典文獻學在讀博士生,本碩博士就讀於四川大學文學院,求學期間多次獲得校級獎學金、優秀研究生榮譽。博士期間修完佛教史料、中外語言文化等專業課程,已獨立刊發兩篇學術期刊論文,碩士畢業論文圍繞隋唐五代禪宗語錄展開研究。目前主要聚焦於中國古典文獻學與佛教文獻交叉研究、隋唐佛教譯場制度史、域外漢籍傳播等領域。

Zou Min is a doctoral candidate in Chinese Classical Philology at the College of Liberal Arts, Sichuan University, having completed undergraduate, master’s and doctoral studies consecutively at the same institution. During her studies, she won university-level scholarships and the Outstanding Graduate award on multiple occasions. She finished core courses including Buddhist Historical Materials and Cross-cultural Studies of Languages and Civilizations at the doctoral stage and published two academic journal papers as the sole author. Her master’s dissertation focused on Chan quotations compiled from the Sui through the Five Dynasties periods. Her current research covers interdisciplinary studies of Chinese classical documents and Buddhist texts, the institutional history of Tang Buddhist translation centers, and the overseas dissemination of Chinese Buddhist manuscripts.
