Barend ter Haar is a leading Dutch sinologist and historian of Chinese religion, who has taught at Heidelberg University, Leiden University, University of Oxford, and University of Hamburg. Trained in the Netherlands, he specializes in the religious and socio-cultural history of late imperial China, combining historical and anthropological approaches to study the formation and evolution of religious phenomena in specific social contexts.
His research focuses on popular religion, sectarian movements, and secret societies from the Ming and Qing periods, emphasizing the interplay of religious narratives, ritual practices, and local society. His major works reexamine categories such as “orthodoxy/heresy” and “religion/secret society,” highlighting the political and epistemological processes behind them.

Actively engaged in international collaborations, his work has had a lasting influence on understanding the religious culture and social dynamics of late imperial China.
