廣義而言,一切口頭與書面作品皆具文學性,佛教文獻資料概莫能外。其中既有道德與教誨之宗教追求,其潛在目的終究必與佛教之解脫論相始終,並亦與若干濃郁之宗教感情相伴隨。無論是風格質樸的巴利語上座部佛教文獻,還是想像瑰奇偉麗的大乘佛教經典,尤其是極具文學特色的各類本生故事、譬喻經典以及佛傳、僧傳,再到受佛教思想影響的世界各國詩歌、小說、戲劇、勸世詩偈、俚曲、變文、俗講、寶卷等,其敘事風格大體皆有自身獨特之魅力。而天竺、震旦、東瀛、朝鮮,以及蒙、藏等保存了各類佛教语言、文献,其傳統之敘事手法、文學技巧與風格,更可謂變化萬千。本研討會將佛教的敘事傳統置於宏大的宗教與文化視野之下,對其進行跨文化與多媒介的跨學科考察。
