Through meticulous and humane argumentation, this book presents a reconstruction and presentation of a segment of the textual history of Mahāyāna sūtras. Contrary to the notion of a single, pristine “Urtext” from which Mahāyāna sūtras are believed to have emerged and undergone modification or damage to reach their present form, this study demonstrates that their creation and development is a dynamic and fluid process: Once “born” and in circulation, these texts were in a state of flux, open to the influence of exegesis and other factors. By undertaking a thorough examination and comparison of ancient texts in various languages and presenting this historical account through rigorous textual criticism, Zacchetti identifies and explores the diverse interpretations and reflections encapsulated in the extant Da zhidu lun, a vibhāṣā form of commentary on the Larger Prajñāpāramitā, which have been subtly incorporated into subsequent versions of the root text, particularly in the Gilgit manuscript recension. We marvel at Zacchetti’s intense analysis, comparable to the act of tracing the origins of a river from a glass of water. It provides not only an indispensable and valuable illustration for our understanding of the growth and flow of Mahāyāna texts in a specific time and space, but also a paradigm for such research.
